Caligula's behavior was certainly erratic and cruel, leading many historians to believe that he may have suffered from mental illness. He exhibited extreme paranoia, megalomania, and a propensity for violence, which are often associated with conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. However, it is also possible that his behavior was a result of the absolute power he held as emperor and the influence of his upbringing in a dysfunctional and power-hungry family. Ultimately, the true nature of Caligula's mental state remains a subject of debate among historians. **

Caligula became emperor after the assassination of his great-uncle, Emperor Tiberius, in 37 AD. Tiberius had named Caligula and his cousin Gemellus as joint heirs, but the Praetorian Guard, the imperial bodyguard, proclaimed Caligula as the sole emperor. Caligula's reign began with widespread popularity, but his erratic behavior and cruelty led to his assassination by members of the Praetorian Guard in 41 AD. **

Caligula was referred to as a mad ruler due to his erratic and unpredictable behavior. He was known for his extreme cruelty, extravagance, and megalomania. Caligula's reign was marked by his arbitrary and capricious decisions, including appointing his horse as a consul and declaring himself a god. His reign was characterized by paranoia, violence, and a disregard for the well-being of his subjects, leading to his reputation as a mad and tyrannical ruler. **

There is a popular myth that the Roman Emperor Caligula appointed his horse, Incitatus, as a consul. However, there is no historical evidence to support this claim. It is likely that this story originated as a way to portray Caligula as a mad and irrational ruler. While Caligula was known for his eccentric behavior, there is no credible evidence to suggest that he actually appointed his horse as a consul. **
