In 1548, the Ottobeuren Monastery State was a feudal society where serfdom conditions were prevalent. Serfs were bound to the land they worked on and were required to provide labor and goods to the monastery in exchange for protection and a place to live. Serfs had limited rights and freedoms, and their lives were heavily controlled by the monastery. They were subject to the authority of the monastery's rulers and had little opportunity for social mobility. **

In Feuchtwangen from the 15th to the 18th century, the manorial system was characterized by large estates owned by nobles or religious institutions. These estates were worked by serfs who were tied to the land and obligated to provide labor and goods to their lords in exchange for protection and the right to work the land. In the Ottobeuren monastery state, serfdom conditions were similarly harsh, with serfs being bound to the land and required to work for the monastery without pay. Serfs in both systems had limited personal freedoms and were subject to the authority of their lords. **
