"Eigen" is used to indicate that something belongs to a specific person or thing, such as "mein eigenes Auto" (my own car). "Selbst" is used to emphasize that the subject is doing something on their own or by themselves, such as "Ich habe es selbst gemacht" (I did it myself). Both words can be used to convey a sense of ownership or independence, but "eigen" is more about possession and "selbst" is more about personal agency. **

The medieval saying "Stadtluft macht frei" means "city air makes you free" and reflects the idea that in cities, individuals had more freedom and opportunities compared to rural areas where they might be tied to feudal obligations. On the other hand, "Luft macht eigen" means "air makes you independent" and suggests that the fresh air and open spaces of the countryside can lead to a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. Both sayings highlight the contrasting perspectives on urban and rural life during the medieval period. **
